Dear Friends,
At last night’s City Council meeting the budget was approved. I want to thank City Council for voting to move forward with the 2025 budget as presented.
This budget preserves all of the items that give us such a great quality of life in Ocean City, and as I stated at the meeting, I’m implementing a freeze on new hires for all positions other than those required by contract or law. As I also stated, I’m committed to working with council on all budgetary issues moving forward.
Also passed at last night’s meeting was authorization for award of a construction contract to improve the property at 16th & Haven. Councilman Jody Levchuk and I will be going door to door in the surrounding neighborhood to inform them of our plans.
City Council approved the new digital scoreboard for Carey Stadium and the current scoreboard will be relocated to the Tennessee Avenue fields. I also informed council that the new informational sign for the Music Pier marquee will be installed next week.
The city’s road construction projects are nearing completion as we work to clean everything up before Memorial Day weekend. There may be some work done in the period of time after Memorial Day through mid-June, before schools close, so the final touches can be done on certain roads and alleys. We will notify specific neighborhoods of the work impacting their properties.
Coming up this weekend in Ocean City is the Ocean City schools’ art showcase at the Music Pier on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the Boardwalk, the Spring Cruisin’ the Boards Car Show runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
This Sunday (May 11) the city is hosting the Special Olympics New Jersey Area 8 Track and Field Meet. The games begin with the procession of athletes at 9:40 a.m.
We encourage as many community members to attend as possible to show support and encouragement for the athletes and their families. We also expect children and families from our “Special Olympics Young Athletes Program” to attend and support the Olympians. We offer this program on Sundays at the Community Center.
These awesome kids (ages 2-7) are not old enough to compete themselves, but they are eager to show support and become future athletes. This is a tremendous event supporting special Olympians of all ages from Cape May, Atlantic, and Cumberland counties. We hope to see you all on Sunday.
As a reminder, tomorrow, Saturday, May 10, letter carriers in Ocean City will be collecting food for families in need. Carriers ask that residents collect and bag non-perishable food items, then place them by their mailboxes for pickup tomorrow. All food will be donated to the Ocean City Ecumenical Council’s Community Food Cupboard.
I’m sad to report on the recent passing of Tina LoBiondo, the wife of retired Congressman Frank LoBiondo. Please join Michele and me in extending deepest condolences to the family and many friends of the LoBiondos.
Finally, I’d like to wish Michele and all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day!
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
