Shore Medical Center announced that Sara Garces-Cano, a nurse on the hospital’s 5 Hayes unit, has been named the May Guardian Angel of the Month for providing passionate and exceptional patient care.
Shore established the Guardian Angel program to enable community members to say “Thank you” to a special Shore caregiver through a donation to the Somers Point hospital in their honor.
Garces-Cano began her career at Shore as a nurse aide on 5 Hayes in 2016. She attended nursing school while working full time and earned her RN in 2018. She continued on the path of nursing excellence, achieving her bachelor's of science in nursing in 2022.
Kelly Duma, manager of 5 Hayes, said that Garces-Cano is an excellent nurse and devoted member of the nursing team.
“Sara is a kind, smart and reliable nurse and a great leader on our unit. She regularly assumes the charge nurse role and enjoys precepting new nurses,” Duma said. “Sara goes above and beyond to care for her patients and her coworkers. It has been a pleasure watching Sara excel in her career.”
A patient recently made a Guardian Angel donation to the medical center in Garces-Cano’s honor and had this to say about her: “Sara was an incredible nurse. She is compassionate, knowledgeable, caring, intelligent and went above and beyond for me and my family. She even made my children feel welcome when I was in a negative headspace. Sara is an amazing human being and was truly my Guardian Angel!”

Shore Medical Center's Guardian Angel program provides an opportunity for patients and families to recognize anyone at Shore who makes a difference in their care or experience. Guardian Angels are recognized among their peers and presented with a Guardian Angel pin at Shore’s annual pinning ceremony.
