A new Domino’s Pizza location is taking shape at the corner of Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue in Ocean City, NJ, at the former site of Ocean Pharmacy.

The owner of the property at the corner of Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue in the heart of Ocean City hopes to open a Domino’s Pizza by Super Bowl Sunday in February 2015.

Salim Joarder said he had hoped to have the shop open by summer, but the project hit a number of snags. And he acknowledges that early February is not yet a firm date for opening.

For more than seven decades, the property across from Ocean City’s historic City Hall was home to a local pharmacy that operated under different names, most recently Ocean Pharmacy. The pharmacy closed its doors for the final time earlier this year.

Joarder owns Domino’s franchises throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including locations in Absecon, Atlantic City and Egg Harbor. He said the Ocean City location would include sit-in, take-out and delivery services.

Domino’s operated for more than 20 years in Ocean City, first at the corner of 11th Street and Asbury Avenue (the current Starbuck’s location), then on the 900 block of Haven Avenue, before closing in 2009.

Roger McLarnon, director of Community Operations in Ocean City, said Monday that the developers of the property have had “very constructive” meetings with city building officials as the company works to obtain relevant permits.

If the estimated cost of the renovation exceeds 50 percent of the building’s assessed value, the developers will have to “floodproof” the building to a certain height with such measures as water-resistant walls, elevated electrical sockets and flood gates at doorways to prevent water infiltration.

The interior of the first floor is gutted at the moment, and william mclees architecture of Somers Point is designing the new space.
