Jennifer Bailey is about to open the curtain on her third act in Ocean City.

The Barefoot Market — a neighborhood grocery featuring organic produce and gourmet food to go — will open on the 200 block of West Avenue sometime in early March.

Bailey and her ex-husband opened the Fourth Street Cafe in the early 1990s and helped it earn a reputation for its scones and as a popular year-round gathering place in Ocean City. She moved from Fourth Street to open the Who’s on First Cafe in 2009.

Who’s on First closed last month and a sign now directs customers to the new Barefoot Market. It had been set to reopen in late January. But final preparations and approvals, and a family matter in California, pushed back the opening to March, Bailey said.

The market first opened in August, featuring local organic eggs, cheese and produce. The newly launched store also will have a kitchen preparing sandwiches and soups, pastries and homemade breads, available for takeout.

Bailey envisions the market as a place to get a cup of espresso or coffee in the morning, a hot panini sandwich in the afternoon and products such as grilled salmon, local honeys, jellies or chutneys to take home.

The market is located at 214 West Avenue and is part of a growing year-round community in that part of town. Bailey purchased the building and lives above the market. She said she’s excited her new venture will be part of the neighborhood.

“It’s something new for Ocean City,” she said.
