This afternoon, the Ocean City High School football squad became the first team to use the new artificial turf field at Carey Stadium. The project is complete, and the facility is beautiful.
Rowan University will hold its annual Brown & Gold Scrimmage there tomorrow morning, and in the coming months and years, the new facility will be used for football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse games for athletes of all ages. Along with the newly resurfaced track, the facility will be home to Ocean City High School’s exceptional track and field teams. The stadium also will be used for a variety of community events throughout the year.
The new field is an important investment in the youth of our town – our future – and it’s also a responsible project for taxpayers. Having a view of the Atlantic Ocean from a high school field is wonderful and unique, but it also provides some substantial challenges in maintaining a grass surface.
The new surface is softened by an entirely organic cork infill. The design is state-of-the-art technology from Field Turf USA. I’m certain the field will soon be considered another one of Ocean City’s treasures.
On Thursday, I had the pleasure of joining the Friends of the Ocean City Pops at their 27th annual luncheon. Because he’s worn a pretty good path across the boardwalk on his way to the thousands of shows he’s directed, I presented William Scheible with a piece of the ‘walk in recognition of his 30th year as musical director and conductor of the Pops.
Under Bill’s leadership over the past three decades, the Pops has grown to include every kind of music appealing to people of every age. Our town is very lucky to have its own orchestra, and the Pops is a true jewel. I look forward to hearing more wonderful music from him in the years to come.
I’d like to encourage everybody to catch a Pops performance this summer. There are a variety of shows left on the schedule. Information and tickets are available at ocnj.us/boxoffice/, at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office, or at any welcome center in town.
I want to remind everybody that ACT Engineers and the city team will hold two meetings on Saturday, Aug. 20, to let residents know about Ocean City’s 2016 bay dredging program. A meeting to discuss proposed work at Snug Harbor, Glen Cove and the entrance area of South Harbor will be held 11:30 a.m. in the Senior Center at the Ocean City Community Center. Residents of the Nor’Easter Residential Marina community at Seventh Street and Pleasure Avenue are invited to a separate meeting at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center.
