Dear Friends:

On Monday, our nation observed Vietnam War Veterans Day. Americans from every part of the country lost their lives to protect the liberties that make our nation what it is, and the men and women who returned were often treated in a way that was not befitting of their bravery and sacrifices.

Ocean City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts include many Vietnam veterans, and I hope you all will join me in thanking them for their service, giving them the recognition they deserve and remembering all those we lost.

The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) opened a 30-day public comment period this week on a large-scale wind energy project proposed to be constructed 15 miles off our shoreline.

This initial comment period will help determine the scope of what will be considered during an extensive review process.

Whether or not you support this project, this is an opportunity to comment directly with the agency that has jurisdiction over it. More information on how to participate is available on the city website.

With up to $7 million now available to Ocean City as part of the coronavirus relief package and with the federal government now considering a $2 trillion infrastructure plan, we are exploring every opportunity to improve our facilities and to provide relief to our taxpayers.

A big part of the city team’s success has been in being ready to take advantage of announcements like these, gathering information, and advocating strongly on behalf of the city. This is the due diligence that keeps the city fiscally responsible.

We are expecting a visit from the Easter Bunny (Saturday, April 3) and our Fire Department is prepared to provide a tour of the city starting at 10 a.m. Anybody interested in seeing his route can click here or follow it in real time using the Ocean City Vacation app.

Later on Saturday, the second of two Great Egg Hunts will be up on the Boardwalk. You also can look forward to Easter events – including the interdenominational Sunrise Service (including a livestream at facebook.com/OceanCityNJVacation) an outdoor Dueling Pianos show and our annual Fashion Stroll at the Music Pier.

Michele and I would like to extend our condolences to the Millevoi family. They lost their patriarch, Kenneth Millevoi Sr., in March. A lot of us in town rely on Best Tire for auto repair, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to Ken for bringing this vital service to town.

We also want to wish everybody a Happy Easter.

Warm regards,

Mayor Jay A. Gillian
