The John R. Elliott HERO Campaign will host its ninth annual HERO Walk & 5K Run on Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center, located at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The competitive 5K Boardwalk Run begins at 9:30 a.m., with prizes for men and women in different age groups. The HERO Walk follows at 11 a.m.
Proceeds from the event support the HERO Campaign and its mission to promote designated driving. Sponsors included AtlantiCare, Stockton University, OceanFirst Bank, Miss Night in Venice Pageant, Kramer Beverage, Foster-Karney Foundation, Viking Yachts, Clear Channel Outdoor, Iron Workers Local 399, Jane French, Dallas & Di Krapf, Team Matt Uhl and Tishman Construction-AECOM Technology.
In addition to the walk and run, supporters take the HERO pledge to be and use designated drivers. The event will also include music, face painting and balloon sculptures for the kids.
About the HERO Campaign:
The HERO Campaign was established by the family of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., who was killed in a July 2000 collision with a drunk driver two months after graduating from the U.S. States Naval Academy.
The campaign is now saving lives in seven states in partnership with law enforcement, schools and colleges, federal and state highway safety organizations, the licensed beverage industry and professional sports teams.
Since its inception in 2000, the HERO Campaign has grown into a major movement to prevent impaired driving that has received national recognition and awards. It has also helped to reduce alcohol-related fatalities and incidents, including a 35 percent reduction in DUI fatalities in New Jersey and other states over the past decade.
