With a parking lot project complete, access to Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area (“Dog Beach”) was restored this week.

The parking lot and pedestrian access pathway to the beach at Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area are back open.

A Cape May County contractor finished a job to improve the parking lot earlier this week.

The parking lot is now protected by a new rock berm along Great Egg Harbor Inlet, and the gravel surface of the lot has been replaced and regraded.

The small stretch of sand on the inlet just north of the Ocean City-Longport Bridge is popular, because it’s one of the only beaches in the state where dogs are permitted in the summer. Most know the spot as “Dog Beach.”

Many were surprised last week to find that access to the beach was blocked because of the project. A portion of the beach is off-limits, because it’s a protected bird habitat area.

Full access was restored on Tuesday. An orange fence still protects a small area that will be revegetated.

On Saturday, the lot was full and parked cars lined the shoulder of the causeway owners and pets enjoyed a nice day at the beach.
