Bay Avenue Construction Update

Detour signs were a common sight on Bay Avenue during construction.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work is being done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street.

Currently, the only new 20-inch PVC pipe that remains to be installed is between 12th and Ninth Streets. In an effort to get this phase of the project completed, the contractor has dedicated three crews to the task.

However, with all the materials and equipment staged in such a limited area, the application of temporary pavement and demobilization on Fridays and the re-mobilization on the following Monday has become extremely difficult and time consuming.

As a result, during the weekend of April 4 and April 5, Bay Avenue will be open to local traffic only between 14th and Ninth Streets, with all work areas and materials zoned off.

The other work that will be done over the upcoming week is the connection of vent piping to the 15 remaining concrete chambers that are distributed throughout the length of the project. The minor amount of excavation that will be required to complete this task will be protected with lane shifts.

The Municipal Utilities Authority apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the project and very much appreciates the continuing cooperation and patience on the part of the City, the County, and the residents and businesses of Ocean City.
