Bike OCNJ Distributes Free Lights to Ocean City Bicyclists

Ocean City students who rode their bicycles to school on Monday (June 13) found something different on their bikes for the ride home. While they were at school, volunteers from Bike OCNJ installed free bicycle lights for safe riding after dusk. Bike OCNJ added the small lights on elastic bands to all bicycles parked outside Ocean City’s three schools on Monday. They will return on Tuesday. The lights were placed at the front (white) and rear (red) of all bikes.

Surfers, Community Show Heart, Raise $3,000 to Benefit Autism

The Heart of Surfing event, held Saturday afternoon on the 7th St Beach, was the most successful yet both in participation, and fundraising to aid children with autism. The event, now in its third year, included a conventional surfing contest and surfing sessions for special needs individuals. Volunteers assisted the special needs participants in catching waves, standing on the boards, and sometimes riding tandem.

Miss NJ Parade Kicks off Pageant Activities Wednesday

In a town that loves its parades – Ocean City has the Halloween, Christmas and world-famous Doo Dah just to name three – Wednesday’s Miss New Jersey Parade might be considered a bit underrated. But that is about to change if Karen Mahar has anything to say about it. “I am feeling good about our lineup and I hope people come out,” Parade Director Mahar said. “It is in the middle of the week and the summer season still isn’t (in full swing) and I am not sure all our residents and visitors know about it. But it really is a nice event.”

Show Us Your Paws Parade Adds Some “Bark” to the Boardwalk

Exactly once a year, dogs are welcome on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Not only is that fact alone special, but the presence of the canines helped to benefit an outstanding cause, the Humane Society of Ocean City. The former “Barks on the Boards” parade was re-launched on Saturday as “Show Us Your Paws,” a play on the famous “show us your shoes” mantra of Atlantic City’s Miss America Parade and Ocean City’s own Miss New Jersey Pageant parade.

An Alien Invasion on the Boardwalk

Two giant green aliens and a suspected UFO landed in Ocean City yesterday, providing an unusual sight for local residents and visitors to the Boardwalk. But unlike the furor caused by Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” broadcast of the 1940s, alleging a similar fictional New Jersey visit from extraterrestrials, and causing widespread panic, Thursday’s Ocean City “ landing” brought mostly smiles and no screams.

Mayor’s Update 6-10

Last night, Jim Mallon informed City Council that we will proceed with the north end pump station project with an outfall basin at the end of Sixth Street. The $8.7 million drainage project aims to bring relief to thousands of residents affected by some of the worst flooding in Ocean City, and it takes advantage of a $5 million grant from FEMA.

North End Drainage Project Moves Forward

Following several months of discussions with representatives of permitting agencies, including the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection administration, the state Green Acres program and the Division of Land Use Regulation and Coastal Regulation, the city has decided it is prudent to move forward with its north-end pump station project with the outfall located at Sixth Street, where it was originally proposed.
