OC Girls & Coaches Ready for Their Shot at Girls Under...

Ocean City will be well-represented July 19-21 at the Girls’ Under 15 U.S. Lacrosse Championships, to take place in Westfield Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis. Not only will there be six current or future members of the Red Raiders participating as part of the NJ South All Stars, but the squad is coached by Abby Mullen, the Raiders’ Head JV coach and assistant varsity coach and a physical education teacher at the high school; and Mikenzie Helphenstine, a third grade teacher at Ocean City Primary School and freshman field hockey coach at OCHS. Mikenzie also coaches lacrosse for the Upper Twp./Ocean City Warriors recreation league squad.

Mayor’s Update – July 15

Dear Friends, I’m sad to report on the passing of Byron T. Mercer last Friday. He lived in Ocean City for more than 50 years, and many remember him as the long-time advertising director of the Ocean City Sentinel Ledger. He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War, and he was a member of St. Peters United Methodist Church, an Ocean City Housing Authority commissioner, Ocean City Free Public Library publicity chairman, Cape May County Parks and Zoo commissioner, Ocean City Arts Center board member, and a past master of Ocean City’s Masonic Lodge. Mercer was buried yesterday at Cape May County Veterans Cemetery after a Masonic service with full military honors.

Council Introduces Zoning Ordinance to Regulate Pile-Driving Operations in Ocean City

City Council introduced a zoning ordinance Thursday night designed to make it easier for residents to rebuild their homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The measure, scheduled for a public hearing and final Council vote July 28, would loosen the city's restrictions on the use of pile-driving machinery for home construction and other projects.

Council to consider contracts to renovate City Hall and the Public...

Two of Ocean City's most historic public buildings will be the focus of key votes by City Council to refurbish one of them and possibly save and renovate the other. The stately City Hall, built in 1914 and an example of Classical Revival architecture, is in store for a facelift that will preserve the building's brick and terra cotta exterior.

If the calendar reads mid-July, that means Night in Venice plans are heating up in Ocean City. The annual boat parade, one of the most eagerly-anticipated events of the summer season, takes place in its 62nd annual edition this Saturday, July 16th. And why wouldn’t it be anticipated? Where else can you join thousands of spectators and watch as dozens of decorated boats make their way along the route from the Longport Bridge along the back bays to Tennessee Avenue?
