Ocean City Fire and Rescue Services Swearing-In Rescheduled for Friday

The Ocean City Department of Fire and Rescue Services will hold a swearing-in ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, March 16 at the Ocean City Tabernacle (550 Wesley Avenue). The event had originally been scheduled for March 2 but was postponed due to the weather. Ocean City’s new fire chief, James P. Smith, will be sworn in during the event, a fire department tradition. The ceremony also will include the swearing-in of members for each rank of the fire department, including deputy chief, captain and firefighter...

Ocean City’s Tourney Run Halted in State Semifinals

The clock struck midnight on a storybook season and tournament run Friday for the Ocean City High School girls’ basketball team. The Red Raiders battled gamely but dropped a 62-37 verdict to a more experienced Ewing team in the Group III State Semifinals at Deptford (Gloucester County) High School. Thus, Ocean City finished its season at 22-9, but not before winning an unlikely South Jersey championship...

Mayor’s Update: March 9

At last night’s City Council meeting, Finance Director Frank Donato made a presentation on budgeted revenues and expenses for 2018. He offered an analysis of ratable trends, fund balance, debt service, operating expenses, full-time staffing, health insurance, pensions and other parts of the budget. The work that goes into putting together this annual plan is a team effort, and I have always instructed everybody to start from zero and budget only what’s necessary to maintain our level of services. I’m confident that we have delivered a responsible budget, and I look forward to working with City Council to further refine it...
