The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provides a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. This year, a fireworks display returns to cap off the bayfront festivities at the conclusion of the parade. The optional theme will be “TV’s Greatest Hits,” a celebration of the greatest shows, characters and moments in television history. Grand marshals will include teen singing sensation Jackie Evancho and NFL-lineman-turned-magician Jon Dorenbos (who both were hits on “America’s Got Talent”), along with Laurie Hernandez and Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy of “Dancing With the Stars” fame...

A leatherback sea turtle owes its life to an Ocean City man whose fast action freed the reptile. The turtle’s head and neck were ensnared in fishing line during the incident which took place on Thursday. Jeff Valentine was working on a Towboat U.S. Shamrock Marine Towing vessel as it conducted a training exercise with a Coast Guard helicopter. The crews were in waters of the Great Egg Inlet, off Longport. Valentine and the other crew members from his boat and members of the helicopter crew spotted the massive beast...

The Ocean City Police Department has received multiple complaints over the last week from citizens and local businesses pertaining to a phone scam. This scam was previously attempted over this last winter and affected multiple Ocean City residence. The scam works like this...

A 7-year-old boy was struck by a car this morning while crossing Bay Avenue near 18th Street. The incident remains under investigation, but it’s a sobering reminder of the importance of traffic safety for both drivers and pedestrians. I’m told the boy is in stable condition at Cooper Medical Center. I hope you all will join me in saying prayers for him and his family. I also urge you all to use extreme caution on our busy summer roads, to follow all traffic laws, to pay attention and to go slow. A number of North End residents have requested that the beach along Great Egg Harbor Inlet be added to the routes for our beach-raking equipment. I’ve been informed that the area between the groin at Seaspray Road and the toll bridge is part of a protected zone designated by the state Department of Environmental Protection, so raking the beach there is strictly prohibited...

For the first time this season, all 15 South Jersey beach patrols plus Harvey Ceders (LBI) competed against each other in the 2018 AC Lifeguard Classic Races. There were four races starting with the Doubles Row and continuing with the Swim, Singles Row and Doubles Row Rescue...

The Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation will present a fundraiser, the “Slide for Amyloid” tomorrow, July 20 at the Ocean City Water Park to raise awareness and funds to combat the deadly disease, Amyloidosis.
