Mayor’s Update: October 19

In his weekly message to the public, Mayor Jay Gillian discusses the four pumping stations that are a key part of a flood-mitigation project in the Fourth Ward. The first pump was activated this week. Work continues on the other three.

UMC in Ocean City Raises $130,000 at Gala

Over 200 people attended Creating Experiences, a gala in support of United Methodist Communities (UMC) at The Shores, on Friday, Oct. 12. The event was held at the Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point, and raised $130,000 from live and silent auctions, and sponsors and gala admission, according to a UMC press release. The proceeds will support planned physical changes to The Shores and complements the goal to be "Creating Experiences" for not only their residents, but also for individuals and groups within the Ocean City community-at-large.

Ocean City Seeks Volunteers for Beach Sweeps on Saturday

Ocean City is seeking volunteers to help clean up litter and other debris on the beaches this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The beach cleanup is held every fall in partnership with the New Jersey environmental group Clean Ocean Action and is part of a statewide effort. Last year, 7,416 volunteers removed 373,686 pieces of debris on beaches statewide.

Ocean City Field Hockey Defeats Absegami 9-0

In it’s final home stand of the 2018 regular season, the Ocean City High School field hockey team dominated Absegami High School 9-0. The win brings Ocean City’s record to 13-0 in conference and 15-2-1 on the season. Jaclyn Charbonneau led all scorers with two goals and three assists on the evening while Molly Reardon (3g) Nya Gilchrist (2g) and Reese Bloomstead (1g, 1a) all contributed multiple points. Freeholder Hayes Honored by Boy Scouts of America

On Tuesday evening, Cape May County Freeholder and Ocean City resident, Marie Hayes was named as the County’s recipient of one of the Boy Scouts of America’s highest local honors. The Garden State Council of the Boy Scouts of America recognized Hayes as one of the “Outstanding Women of South Jersey” at their 2018 Women of Achievement Awards event. County Clerk to Discuss Election at Oct. 19 Forum in Ocean...

Cape May County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti will be the featured speaker during a public forum focusing on the Nov. 6 election. Sponsored by the Ocean City AARP Chapter 1062, the forum will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Room 111 at the Ocean City Free Public Library. The public is invited to attend.

O.C. Happenings: HERO Walk and Porsche Show This Weekend

The Ocean City Boardwalk will be the setting for two major events this weekend – one a local tradition and the other a first-time show in town. The John R. Elliott HERO Walk and 5K Run on the Boardwalk, now in its eighth year, will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21. Vintage (1948-1965) 356 series Porsche owners will roll into town Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20, for their “East Coast Holiday.” This is the first time Ocean City will host the event.

UMC at The Shores in Ocean City Appoints Director of Memory...

United Methodist Communities (UMC) at The Shores, a senior living community located on Bay Avenue in Ocean City, appointed Dawn Zindel to the position of director of Tapestries Memory Care Residence. In this role, she will assume Tapestries’ oversight, staff management and services, which focus on residents with neurocognitive disorders, related dementias or who experience difficulty with thinking, according to a UMC press release.

O.C. Field Hockey Wins Back-to-Back Games

The Ocean City High School field hockey team stifled conference opponent Bridgeton Friday afternoon 10-0 and turned around Saturday afternoon to defeat non-conference foe Lenape 3-1. The wins improved Ocean City’s record to 13-2-1. Friday’s game was family day, which allowed Ocean City the opportunity to say thank you to all of the parents and fans who support the team all season long.
