O.C. Boy Scouts Sponsor “Super Chili Bowl”

Ocean City Boy Scouts from Troop 32 will be holding the third annual Super Chili Bowl fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 4-6 p.m. at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center, located at 1735 Simpson Ave. Prizes will go to the top chefs receiving votes from the general public after sampling the many different chili styles. The event is free for chef/participants, with $5 per person charged at the door for taste-testing guests.

Ocean City Police Activity Report: Jan. 6-12

The Ocean City Police Department responded to a total of 489 calls for service during the week of Jan. 6-12. A breakdown of the calls follows.

Ocean City to Celebrate MLK Day on Jan. 21

Ocean City will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at two different events on Monday, Jan. 21: the Day of Service and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony and Soul Food Dinner. The ceremony, a long tradition in Ocean City, moves this year from its customary date on the Saturday before to the Monday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21. It will be held at noon at the Hughes Performing Arts Center of Ocean City High School. Volunteers are invited to join others nationwide in a Day of Service earlier on Jan. 21 to honor Dr. King’s contributions. Residents are asked to participate in a citywide cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon.

New Cape May County Jail Opens

All the inmates were safely transferred to the new Cape May County Correctional Facility on Monday. Cape May County Sheriff Robert Nolan credited the Correctional staff with assistance from the County Prosecutor’s Office and all local police departments that participated in the orderly transfer. The new jail is located next to the old jail, which will be demolished in the future. The need for a new jail arose as the old building was not fitting within state code and was becoming too costly to maintain.

Electric Work Will Require Service Interruptions

Atlantic City Electric will improve reliability in Ocean City by installing special equipment to reduce the number of customers affected by power outages. The work will require service interruptions during the week of Jan. 14-19. The areas affected by the interruptions follow.

Mayor’s Message: Jan. 11

In his latest message to the public, Mayor Jay Gillian reminds residents of a town hall meeting Saturday to discuss Ocean City's affordable housing program. The meeting is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Ocean City Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Avenue. A presentation will outline the city's affordable housing obligations. Members of the public will be able to ask questions.

Forecast Calls for 2-4 Inches of Snow

Snow is expected to begin Saturday afternoon and continue through at least Sunday afternoon, according to the latest storm advisory from the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management. There is the potential for 2 to 4 inches of snow in northeastern Maryland, Delaware, and southern New Jersey, including the shore. There is a small chance of gale force wind gusts on the coastal waters of New Jersey and Delaware, and on the Delaware Bay from Sunday into Sunday night.

Ocean City Rolls Past Absegami in Girls’ Basketball

The Ocean City girls’ basketball team used a strong second quarter to defeat Absegami High School at home, 58-35. Danielle Donoghue led all scorers with 17 points and teammate Emma Finnegan chipped in 13. The starting five for Ocean City consisting of Donoghue, Finnegan, Tori Rolls, Savannah Holt and Molly Hoffman combined for 44 points.

Miss New Jersey Competition is on the Move

Newly appointed Miss New Jersey Education Foundation Executive Director David Holtzman of Ventnor held a press conference Wednesday morning to announce that the annual Miss New Jersey competition, which has been held at the Ocean City Music Pier for the last 23 years, has found a new home in Atlantic City. Miss New Jersey 2018 Jaime Gialloreto and newly appointed board member Mike Lopez took to the riser in Resorts’ Atlantic Conference Center to make the announcement. Gialloreto said she had no idea when she set out for Resorts Wednesday morning that a change of venue was going to be announced.
