Freeholder Censured by Board Members

The following is a statement from Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton on Resolution 497-19 and 498-19 related to two censures of Freeholder E. Marie Hayes: We are disappointed by the behavior that was described in the investigation that was conducted by an independent law firm regarding Freeholder Hayes’ actions. The decision that was made was the result of a six-month workplace investigation that interviewed 17 people and culminated with a 114-page investigation report. As a result, the decision was made by the Freeholder Board to put forward by Resolution two censures to Freeholder Hayes.

Smallest OC Baseball Player Stands Tall, Inspires Team and Coaches

Sebastian Hudak’s unlikely journey as a baseball player began with a note handed to him by a new friend at his new school. It ended -- for this season -- with a spot on his league’s All-Star team and a run at the South Jersey championship. Ten-year-old Sebastian has Noonan’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder which often manifests in a form of dwarfism. He relocated to Ocean City in 2017 from Riverton, Burlington County with parents Chuck and Kelly and six brothers and sisters. A seventh sibling, 10-month-old Clay, joined the brood a bit later. Following a year of home schooling to better adjust to their new town, the school-aged Hudaks entered the OC public school system last September. The usual “new kid” stigma did not affect Sebastian, whose nickname is “Sea Bass.” “He never had problems making friends,” his mom said. “Sea Bass makes friends wherever he goes.” Thus, it was unusual to hear that her son had bonded with Wyatt Tolson and his twin brother Graham. What was unusual was a note Sebastian handed her soon after he entered OC Primary School...

Former Ocean City Crew Team Athlete Reflects on his Historic Win...

Now that the racing is over, local athlete, Matt Catanoso, had a moment to share his thoughts on his crew’s historic win at Henley’s Royal Regatta yesterday. Matt had the honor of coxswaining for the United States Armed Forces crew. His team was comprised for the first time ever of both men and women athletes from the United States Naval Academy in honor of Navy Crew’s 150th Anniversary. This elite crew raced seven other countries over multiple days, winning each of their heats by a large margin. At the final race yesterday, the US crew beat Germany by 3/4 of a boat length to win the regatta and the world famous Kings Cup. Matt shared his experience. “Competing at the Kings Cup has been an absolute honor. The event is a commemoration of peace which both celebrates our longstanding relationships with our allies and reflects upon those who have paid the ultimate price so that we can live in a world of peace. To be able to represent the armed forces as a whole has been incredible. To be able to represent the United States in international competition has been unreal...

Tour de Donut Pedals Out Ratings on Top Treats in Ocean...

Carl Wanek’s 2018 Tour de Donut was such a big hit, there had to do a sequel. And as sequels go, this one was pretty good. Last year over the July 4 holiday, Wanek, 45, a carpenter who lives in Ocean City, decided to take a bike ride with friends to each and every “mom and pop donut shop in town”, to do so in a two hour time limit and to sample and rate the wares of each. Somehow he accomplished his goal, walking into his house literally as the clock struck on his deadline. With experience, this year’s tour should have been easier, Wanek figured. Logistically he was right. The rating the donuts part may have been even more difficult this time around. “We had nine people riding this year, which is triple the participation,” Wanek said proudly. “More people means more donuts, more fun and more laughs.” In addition to the original three riders Wanak and buddies Joe Schneider and Frank Rubba, Carl’s sister Christine Fassman, neighbor and friend Mike DeVlieger and his son Flynn, 15-year-old Carl Wanak IV, mom Tiffany and daughter Phoebe Prettyman joined the party...,

Walton Family Reunion Wiffle Ball Game Brings Out the Neighborhood

The Phillies may have sunk to third place Thursday, but residents of a north end neighborhood had a great ballgame to cheer on without moving their cars. In fact, moving cars would have complicated things, since some were on the field for the 16th annual Walton Family Wiffle Ball game held on the Fourth of July in the alley behind John Walton’s Third Street home.
