O.C. Happenings: Baby Parade, Pops Tribute Concerts

The Ocean City Baby Parade returns for the 110th time on Thursday, Aug. 8. The annual tradition offers a chance for parents to show off Ocean City’s newest generation. The parade features children (ages 10 and under) cruising the Ocean City Boardwalk in themed strollers, wagons and floats. It starts at Sixth Street with children finishing at the Music Pier (at Moorlyn Terrace) and all other entries continuing to 14th Street. Ocean City Beach Patrol Wins 2019 SJ Pool Championship Races

On Sunday, July 21st, Ocean City hosted the 2019 South Jersey Pool Championships at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The races included swimmers from 10 of the 15 South Jersey Beach Patrols. Twelve events took place with a mixture of individual and relay teams competing in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and medley races. The host team, Ocean City, took first place overall followed by Sea Isle City and Brigantine tying for second place. The following are the results...

Longport Wins A.C. Classic; Ocean City Second

The Ocean City Beach Patrol scored points in every event Friday evening at the Atlantic City Classic to secure a second place team finish overall. Longport, the defending South Jersey champions, won three out of the four events to take the team title, while host Atlantic City placed third. The Atlantic City Classic consists of four events: a doubles row, swim, singles row and the newest addition, the rescue relay.

Fishing Club Hauls in Some Food and Cash

Ominous storm clouds over the Boardwalk didn’t deter visitors from touring Ocean City Fishing Club’s fishing pier and helping the local food cupboard at an open house Thursday evening. While learning about the history of the club and its pier, watching fishing demonstrations and enjoying the views of the ocean and beachfront, the 425 visitors also contributed 82 pounds of non-perishable food items and donated $100 to the Ocean City Food Cupboard. An anonymous donor matched the cash collected, raising the total to $200.

Mayor’s Message: July 19

Don't feed the sea gulls! In his weekly message to the public Friday, Mayor Jay Gillian said he has been hearing many more complaints this summer about aggressive sea gulls swooping down and snatching food from people on the beach and Boardwalk. He said some people think it's funny to feed the gulls and see them swarm. He wants it to stop. He noted that feeding sea gulls and other wildlife in Ocean City is against the law. In the meantime, city officials plan to work with Boardwalk merchants on plans to deter the pesky birds from pilfering food, including giving people enclosed containers for their takeout meals, the mayor said.

OCHS Students Create Traffic Safety Videos

Students in Ocean City High School's 2019 media programs teamed up with the Ocean City Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit to produce these public safety announcements on bicycle safety. The videos are a reminder of the importance of following the law when it comes to traffic safety in Ocean City, NJ. The team of Ali Jane Robel, Anna McCabe and Karen Greenwood and a second team of Kayla Killian and Nathan Goudie were chosen as winners by the Traffic Safety Unit and Bike OCNJ. Ruth Graham Featured Speaker, Steve Green in Concert at O.C. Tabernacle

Ruth Graham, daughter of Ruth and Billy Graham, will speak at the Ocean City Tabernacle at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday, July 21. Graham brings a new Biblical perspective to her journey of faith, sharing her story of trials common to all -- her own divorce, her teenage daughter's two pregnancies, and going back to school at age 40. At 7 p.m. on Sunday, Steve Green will perform in concert at the Tabernacle. The son of missionary parents, Green was raised in South America. Throughout his 34 years of ministry, Green has been honored with four Grammy nominations, 18 No. 1 songs, seven Dove Awards, and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.

Blistering Heat Expected Through Sunday

The National Weather Service is warning of dangerously hot conditions starting Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Sunday, with temperatures soaring well into the 90s. Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings may need to be expanded and extended as we go through the week. Heat Index values will range from 100 to 105 Wednesday and Thursday and from 105 to 110 on Friday through Sunday. The highest heat index values are expected to occur on Saturday.
