Ocean City High School student-athletes have received multiple accolades for the 2018-2019 school year for their athletic performance, as well as their sportsmanship. This year the student-athletes and coaching staff have received the NJSIAA Sportsmanship Banner, the Ed Byrnes Award, and were ranked in the top 50 public schools for sports in New Jersey.

Kindness is a choice. It can also be the cool choice for kids. That’s the message of Barbara Gilmour, an Ocean City resident, author, speaker, and creative voice behind Cool Kind Kid, an anti-bullying strategy that aims to re-define what is cool for kids as they encounter social situations. Gilmour’s firm, CKK LLC, offers a wide range of services and products aimed at helping students understand that using kindness is a better option than bullying, or tolerating it. Multiple players had multiple points in Ocean City field hockey’s dominant 12-1 win over conference foe Absegami Monday afternoon. The Red Raiders improved to 7-2 on the season, while the Absegami Braves dropped to 3-5. Coming off a huge overtime win on Saturday versus Haddonfield, the Red Raiders scored early and often to rout the Braves at Carey Stadium.

After a cool morning for the start in Cherry Hill, it was unequivocally hot on the other side of the state by Saturday afternoon, where the 75-mile MS City to Shore Ride ended near the Boardwalk in Ocean City. By early afternoon, riders were pouring over the Route 52 Causeway, where one traffic lane had been reserved for bicyclists. At the foot of the bridge, Ocean City Police periodically blocked traffic for the bikes to make a left for the final stretch to the finish line at Fifth Street behind Ocean City High School. Thousands participated in the race, which has become a September tradition in the seaside resort.

Organizers for the OCNJ Half Marathon are expecting a record turnout for three races on Sunday, Sept. 29. Registration is still open. Last year, almost 1,700 finishers participated in the event, which also includes a 10-mile non-competitive walk/run and a 5-kilometer race. A total of 1,107 runners finished the half marathon. Registration for the 13.1-mile race continues through 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.

With a heavy heart, we have decided as a family that we are no longer going to continue operating the $1 Store into 2020. This will be our last year. Since 1996 the $1 Store has been servicing the community and our visitors with thousands of products selling for $1. Due to the raise in the cost of goods, labor and other costs, we have determined that the store is no longer sustainable in today’s environment as a $1 Store. Unlike most other stores, the $1 Store was able to stay steady on the $1 price and did not raise its price in over 25 years on any of the items. What a salute to JiLLy for making that happen! Although this decision is a good one, it does not come easy. We as a family have taken a lot of pride in the store and have made lots of meaningful relationships with vendors and customers alike...

Ocean City held a major bond sale Thursday and will pay a net interest rate of just 2.2 percent on bonds that will allow the city to maintain its aggressive program of road and drainage improvements and other infrastructure projects, Mayor Jay Gillian announced. The city received 41 bids from nine different banks and financial institutions through a competitive process. Bonds in the amount of $85 million will be awarded to JP Morgan Securities. The outstanding interest rate was a result of the stable and conservative financial practices that led the Standard and Poor's Rating Services to assign the city an “AA” bond rating, Gillian announced Friday in his weekly mayor's message posted on the city website.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow for construction work scheduled during the week of Sept. 23 to 27.
