O.C. Boy Scouts to Hold Fall Clothing Drive

Ocean City’s Boy Scout Troop 32 will hold a clothing drive on Saturday, Oct. 12, between 8 a.m. and noon, to raise funds for needed camping gear and supplies. Gently used clothes, shoes, linens, purses, hats and stuffed animals, bikes, scooters, strollers and car seats with their bases can be dropped off at St. Peter’s Church, 501 Eighth Street, using the back alley between Central and Wesley avenues.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Oct. 7 to 11.

Millville Edges Ocean City Hockey Team

The Ocean City High School field hockey team battled against Millville on Friday afternoon, coming up just short in a 2-1 loss in league play. Chloe Prettyman scored the lone goal for the Red Raiders, who dropped to 10-4 overall (9-1 in league play). Millville improved to 10-1 on the season and 9-1 in league play as well.

The New Jersey Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership approved Ocean City’s grant application for the installation of an upweller at the Bayside Center to cultivate shellfish, Mayor Jay Gillian announced Friday. Ribbed mussels will be raised there, then transferred to Shooting Island to further protect and restore the shoreline and wetlands there. The grant also will allow the city to partner with the school district to provide hands-on educational opportunities for Ocean City High School students and other volunteers interested in marine science, the mayor said in his weekly message to the public posted on the city's website.

Changes Made to Recycling Program

Shredded paper and bulky mixed rigid plastic should now be thrown out as trash in Ocean City instead of being recycled, according to a new change in Cape May County’s recycling rules. Bulky mixed rigid plastic includes plastic laundry baskets, plastic toys and playhouses, plastic lawn furniture, empty plastic trashcans and plastic coolers. Cardboard, office paper, newspaper, junk mail, magazines, paperback books, dry food boxes, beverage carriers and clean pizza boxes should continue to be recycled and placed in your recycling can.
