O.C. Fishing Club to Host Tournament

More than 175 anglers are expected to line the beaches Saturday, Oct. 26, to participate in the Ocean City Fishing Club’s 51st Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament. Ed Parkinson, OCFC’s tournament chair, said the annual event draws teams from fishing clubs throughout the tri-state area, but is open to individuals as well. He expects more than 28 clubs with six-member teams, and upwards of 15 individuals to participate in the tournament, which is held in coordination with the Association of Surf Angling Clubs.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow for work scheduled to be done during the week of Oct. 14 to 18.

Mayor’s Message: Oct. 11

The wind is expected to fade quickly as the lingering coastal storm finally moves away on Saturday, and the forecast looks good for Saturday’s Fall Block Party along Asbury Avenue, Mayor Jay Gillian said. But the fireworks scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday have been canceled, the mayor announced Friday in his weekly message posted on the city's website. The fireworks display was to have traveled by barge through the Great Egg Harbor Inlet, and the marine forecast calls for continued rough seas.

Ocean City Fireworks Canceled

Due to the forecast for rough seas, the fireworks display that had been scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday has been canceled. The display was to have been launched from a barge in the ocean off Ninth Street. All other Fall Block Party and Indian Summer Weekend events will continue as scheduled.

Flood Warning Continues in Ocean City

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning in effect for Ocean City from 4 p.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday. Strong north winds are predicted to continue into Saturday, and the NWS warns of coastal flooding through the next five high tides. An NWS “Warning” indicates that moderate or major flooding is imminent.

O.C. Alumni Association Gets Ready for “Red & White Weekend”

The Ocean City Alumni Association will celebrate its 11th annual Red & White Weekend on the weekend of Oct. 18-20. The weekend festivities will begin Friday, Oct. 18 with a pre-game football rally from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the practice football field. Additional weekend activities include a Red and White Social hosted by the Ocean City Education Foundation on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 7-10 p.m. at Josie Kelly’s in Somers Point.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Strong north and northeast winds are predicted to extend through the end of the week, and the advisory warns of further coastal flooding with successive high tides through Saturday.

Fall Block Party, Fireworks Coming Oct. 12

Ocean City’s premier autumn event – the Fall Block Party – will go off rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. More than 400 crafters, food vendors and entertainers will line a mile of downtown Asbury Avenue between Fifth Street and 14th Street.
