Mayor’s Message: Services for Bill Hughes

Mayor Jay Gillian announced that services will be held Sunday and Monday for former Congressman and U.S. Ambassador to Panama Bill Hughes, who was a long-time Ocean City resident. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Ocean City Tabernacle (550 Wesley Avenue) and again 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (30th Street and Bay Avenue). The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity. The bridges along the Route 52 causeway will be lit red, white and blue in Hughes' honor, the mayor also announced.

O.C. Boy Scout Troop 32 Receives Donation

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the Miss Night In Venice Pageant Committee donated $1,000 to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 32 of Ocean City. The money will be used for various necessities, including replacing and purchasing equipment, as well as offsetting the cost of camping trips.

O.C. Girls Soccer Team Advances in Thriller

Ocean City High School’s girls soccer team was all treats and no tricks Thursday afternoon as it advanced to the South Jersey Group 3 semifinal with a win over visiting Cherry Hill West. The Red Raiders won in thrilling fashion on Halloween, defeating the Lions 1-0 by scoring with just 12 seconds remaining in the contest.

Inbound Lanes of Route 52 Causeway Closed Saturday Morning

The annual Trail of Two Cities 5K run will go off rain or shine at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. The inbound lanes of the Route 52 causeway leading to Ninth Street in Ocean City will be closed to all traffic from about 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday to accommodate the race. Seek an alternative route if you’re traveling to Ocean City at that time.

William Hughes, Ambassador and Former U.S. Rep., Dies; O.C.’s Political Icon

William J. Hughes, an Ocean City political and civic icon, has passed away. He was 87. To understand Hughes’ impact in his adopted hometown, one only needed to observe how beloved Hughes was, a Democrat politician in an overwhelmingly conservative Republican town. In addition to being a longtime South Jersey Congressman and U.S. Ambassador to Panama, Hughes was active in his hometown, donating time, money and expertise to a variety of causes.

Ocean City Advances to S.J. Group 3 Finals

The Ocean City High School field hockey team defeated visiting Mainland 8-3 for the third time this season to advance to the championship game in the South Jersey Group 3 tournament. The Red Raiders, the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, will travel to face the top-seeded Clearview Pioneers on Friday afternoon. Clearview improved its record to 18-2-1, after blanking Gloucester Tech 9-0 in the semifinals.

Trick-or-Treating Postponed Until Friday

Due to the rainy weather forecast, traditional trick-or-treating hours for Ocean City will be postponed from Halloween night. The new hours will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Trail of Two Cities, “Little Shop of Horrors” Highlight Weekend in...

The Trail of Two Cities 5-kilometer run/walk will be held for the 24th time on Saturday, Nov. 2. The popular 5K (3.1-mile) race offers spectacular views over the length of a point-to-point course from Ocean City to Somers Point. The route travels the length of the Route 52 causeway in the lanes usually reserved for cars. On Nov. 1 and 2, the Ocean City Theatre Company’s Junior Company will perform two shows of a Broadway and Hollywood musical that has devoured the hearts of theater-goers for more than 30 years. “Little Shop of Horrors” features 25 students from area schools in grades 7 to 12. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. Details follow on the Trail of Two Cities, "Little Shop of Horrors" and other upcoming special events.

O.C. Girls Soccer Team Dominates in Playoff Win

The Ocean City High School Girls Soccer team kicked off the South Jersey Group 3 state playoff in style, defeating visiting Timber Creek 8-0. The win improves the Red Raiders to 19-1-1, while Timber Creek ends its season with a record of 2-14-2.

Special Weather Statement: Coastal Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. A new moon tide and steady northeast winds will combine to push water levels into the “minor” tidal flooding category.
