Buildings Falling at Former Car Dealership Site

As Ocean City knockdowns go, this is a big one. The former Perry-Egan Chevrolet, AKA Ocean City Chevrolet, began its fade into history this week to make way for development of a yet-to-be determined number of new homes, or possibly for open space. Chain link fencing surrounded the perimeter of the former dealership on Wednesday afternoon as the old buildings which formerly contained a showroom full of new cars, offices, and the service department, met its date with the heavy demolition equipment. A white sign with red lettering stating “Coming soon 20+ single family homes buildable lots available,” was attached to the fencing. The majority of the buildings and the surrounding asphalt / concrete lots are owned by Klause Enterprises, LLC, of Ocean City. Earlier this year, plans were announced for the homes to be built after negotiations for the property to be purchased by the city ended...

Captains Courageous: Trio of Leaders Set the Tone for OC Football

All successful teams have one thing in common: strong leaders who can keep everyone focused through the good times and the bad. For the Ocean City High Red Raiders, currently 8-2 and a finalist in the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs his weekend, that is certainly the case. And while Coach Kevin Smith and his dedicated assistants have done a great job in this regard, the on-field leadership must come from the players themselves. That is where the three captains of the Raiders come in. The 2019 edition of the Raiders has absolutely benefited from such leadership. Senior captains Chris Armstrong and Brian Beckmann and Jake Inserra, a junior, have set the tone for the successful season that the Raiders have enjoyed thus far. Holiday Train Show Coming to Music Pier

Do you like trains and Christmas displays? Well then, the South Jersey Garden Railroad Society has a treat for you on Dec. 7 and 8th at the Ocean City Music Pier. The model train show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Cost is $3 for adults and $1 for children.

American Legion Meals Return In Spring

The popular Ocean City American Legion Post 524 Sunday morning buffet breakfasts and Wednesday lunches have come to an end for the current year. These events will resume in spring 2020 at the Morvey-Miley Post building located at 46th Street and West Avenue.

‘Earlier Than the Bird’ Celebration Set for Saturday

The early forecast calls for clear weather on Saturday – ideal conditions to kick off the holiday season along downtown Asbury Avenue. In Ocean City, that means shopping in your pajamas for the “Earlier Than the Bird” celebration. The annual downtown shopping extravaganza takes place 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 23 – the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Anybody (pajama-clad or not) can take advantage of early-bird shopping specials at stores on Asbury Avenue between Sixth Street and 11th Street. Holiday Book Sale at O.C. Library

The Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library announced the December Holiday Book Sale. The sale will be held in the atrium of the library, 1735 Simpson Ave., on Friday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Nov. 18 to 22.

Special Weather Statement: Flood Warning

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning in effect for Ocean City from 8 a.m. Sunday through 5 p.m. Monday. Strong northeast winds gusting to 50 mph are predicted for the weekend and into Monday, and the NWS warns of coastal flooding through at least three high tides. Rain is also in the forecast and could make conditions worse. An NWS “Warning” indicates that moderate or major flooding is imminent.

State Champs: O.C. Wins Girls Soccer Title

Ocean City captured its first ever Group 3 state championship in girls soccer Saturday morning, defeating Ramapo High School 3-0 at Kean University. Summer Reimet scored twice and Hannah Keane added a goal to help the Red Raiders cap off a historic run to the state title.
