Ocean City Girls Basketball Takes S.J. Title

The Ocean City girls basketball team captured the South Jersey Group 3 championship Tuesday afternoon by defeating the top-seeded Mainland Mustangs, 31-29. The Red Raiders and the Mustangs have battled for the South Jersey Group 3 title the past four years. Mainland was victorious last year on its way to a state title, but Ocean City was triumphant in 2017 and 2018. Now, the Red Raiders have rounded out their third title in four years. Leading the way was Ocean City senior captain Abbey Fenton, who dropped in a game high 15 points with the help of four three-pointers.

Cape May County Announces Coronavirus Restrictions

The Cape May County Freeholder Board has announced several initiatives to address issues related to the coronavirus. These include restricting visitation at the Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and a travel ban outside of the county for all workers on official duty.

Simon and Garfunkel Tribute, Doo Wop at Music Pier in Summer

The Ocean City Pops announced two special concerts for the 2020 summer season: a tribute that re-creates the legendary 1981 Simon and Garfunkel reunion concert in Central Park and a celebration of doo-wop music. Tickets for both concerts go on sale at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 12. The “Live in Central Park [Revisited]: Simon and Garfunkel” concert featuring the Pops is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 at the Ocean City Music Pier. The Doo Wop Project with the Pops is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Music Pier.

Ocean City Baseball Clinic March 15

The OCYAA is holding a baseball clinic for registered players ages 7-12 on Sunday, March 15, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The clinic will take place at the 35th Street fields. Should there be inclement weather, the clinic will move inside to the Sports & Civic Center at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk. Players must be registered for the 2020 season to be eligible for the clinic. If you have not registered for the 2020 season, please do so online at www.OceanCityBaseball.com.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on construction work scheduled for the week of March 9-13.

“A Night in Monte Carlo” PTA Fundraiser

The Ocean City PTA will host “A Night in Monte Carlo” fundraiser on Saturday, March 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City, 4487 Venicean Road. Tickets cost $75 each, or 2 for $130, and include a beverage voucher, door prize entry, gaming cash, valet parking and hors d’oeuvres.

Mayor’s Message: March 6

Mayor Jay Gillian announced that starting on Monday the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority will be working at the intersection of Ninth Street and Bay Avenue. One lane of traffic in each direction on Ninth Street will remain open at all times. But turns onto Bay, Simpson and Haven avenues will be limited.

Councilman Tony Wilson Seeking Re-election

Tony Wilson, a fourth generation Ocean City resident, is running for re-election for his Third Ward City Council seat. Born and raised in Ocean City, Wilson is the owner of Wilson Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, a local service company that has been operating in Ocean City for the past 50 years. When asked why he is seeking re-election, Wilson stated, “We have an incredible synergy on the Council. We always keep the taxpayer first and that’s why our taxes are one of the lowest in the state for the services we receive.”

Special Weather Statement: Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7. The current advisory forecasts water levels to peak in the hours around high tide on the bay side of Ocean City at 6:03 a.m. Saturday. North winds could gust as high as 35 mph and push water into the back bays.

AARP to Host “Learn About Your Library”

On Friday, March 13, AARP Chapter 1062 will sponsor a free event at the Ocean City Free Public Library to help patrons understand how best to access resources, check out materials and learn about all that the library offers. The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Room 111 at the library, which is located at 1735 Simpson Ave.
