The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders is supporting a unanimous decision by the county's 16 municipalities to discourage non-essential visitation to their communities during the coronavirus outbreak. A statement from the freeholder board follows.

Cape May County announced Sunday its single-biggest day for positive COVID-19 cases with five new cases, bringing the total in the county to 15, according to a press release. The new cases in Cape May County include a 12-year-old girl, 21-year-old man, a 56-year-old woman, a 63-year-old man and a 78-year-old man.

Mayor Jay Gillian announced Sunday that Ocean City will temporarily prohibit online marketplaces from offering short-term rentals to help stem the spread of the coronavirus. "In addition, I have spoken with leaders in the Ocean City real estate community, and they have agreed to suspend short-term rentals of any kind. The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work is being done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. A 12-year-old girl has become the 10th confirmed case of coronavirus in Cape May County. The girl is recovering at her residence, but no other information was disclosed about her in a county press release Saturday.

An executive order by Gov. Phil Murphy is going to close daycare centers on April 1 throughout New Jersey unless the daycare will exclusively service children of "essential employees." The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management wanted to ensure local daycares have access to an application to remain open because of the importance of keeping local daycares available for essential employees during the coronavirus outbreak. The Cape May County Department of Health reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number to nine in the county. A 60-year-old female, a 54-year-old female and a 19-year-old female are the latest people to be infected. Of the nine total confirmed coronavirus cases in Cape May County, all of the people are recovering at their homes, with the exception of one who is doing well at an out of county hospital, according to a county press release. For the first time, the county has released a breakdown of coronavirus cases for each municipality.

As part of the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus in Cape May County, Health Officer Kevin Thomas is recommending that local campground owners and operators delay the opening of countywide campgrounds until May 11. "In the best interest of the patrons and residents, we are recommending campground owners and operators hold off opening local campgrounds until May 11, as a way to reduce and discourage the number of visitors to the county during this outbreak,” Thomas said in a press release.
