Historic Commission Rejects Luxury Condo Project

The Ocean City Historic Preservation Commission on Tuesday night voted down a proposed condominium project that commission members found to be incompatible with the surrounding neighborhood featuring homes from the early 1900s. Opponents said the luxury condo project proposed for 801 Wesley Ave. was too modern- looking and did not blend in with the historic homes and other structures on the street, while proponents said it would be a vast improvement from the eyesore that is currently there.

Madden’s Win Official in Council Race

Ocean City Councilman Pete Madden is officially the winner of an at-large Council seat after all of the mail-in votes and provisionals were counted Tuesday in a close race. Madden prevailed over Second Ward Councilman Tom Rotondi, his closest challenger, by 43 votes.

Ocean City Celebrates After-Prom

On Saturday, Ocean City High School students went from dining and dancing at the historic Flanders Hotel for the prom to enjoying games, inflatables, prizes galore and even trying their hand at a mechanical bull at the 28th annual After-Prom. They enjoyed an array of activities, including live entertainment, food and giveaways from local businesses -- all in a safe and alcohol-free environment.

Rain Doesn’t Deter Shoppers at Ocean City Block Party

The Ocean City Spring Block Party didn’t bring with it sunny skies Saturday or warm temps, for that matter, typically associated with the blockbuster event year after year. But this year's rain-soaked event did bring a lot of families who opted to dress for the occasion, tote their umbrellas and just have a good time -- buying merchandise from beach gear to trinkets to household items, to eating a lot of baked goods and other food.

Ocean City Resident Calls For Increase in Lifeguard Pay

An Ocean City resident is urging city officials to increase the pay for lifeguards to help attract the best candidates who will keep beachgoers safe over the summer. With Boardwalk businesses offering $15 and $16 an hour for their employees, Kathy Hogan, a Wesley Avenue resident, fears that the number of guards this season might fall short, since the pay starts at $12.80 an hour.

Beloved Ocean City Coach and Teacher Celebrated

She was a coach, teacher, mother, wife, sister, and daughter. Her no-nonsense approach to all things helped her and others around her achieve the best on and off the field, in the classroom and throughout life. Mikenzie Helphenstine, affectionately known as “Coach H,” made sure she did all she could, until she couldn’t anymore. Her love and zest for life and family, dedication to her players and her students, resonated with the Ocean City community on Thursday. Hundreds came out Thursday morning to St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Ocean City to pay their respects and to celebrate the life and memories of a strong woman who touched so many.

Rotondi Won’t Concede Council Election

Ocean City Councilman Tom Rotondi did not concede Tuesday when just 48 votes separated him from his opponent Pete Madden for the third at-large seat in the municipal election. Rotondi said he would await the final tallies and the official vote totals once all of the mail-in ballots and provisional ballots were received and counted.

On Saturday, Ocean City High School students will make memories in a major milestone in their lives – prom night. They will walk the red carpet at the historic Flanders Hotel. Ocean City is getting ready to welcome back vacationers. That means it is that time of year when the resort rolls out a major amenity for beachgoers – beach mats. The bright blue mats are made of hard plastic. They sit on top of the sand to create an easy-to-walk pathway.
