A mother and son enjoy a sunny afternoon on Oct. 28 in Ocean City near 21st Street. At the same time, two years ago, a powerful hurricane was on a collision course with Ocean City.
Two years ago today, a hurricane more than 800 miles wide was taking a sharp left turn.
Anybody familiar with Ocean City needs no reminder of what happened next. The damage from Superstorm Sandy’s record storm surge was devastating.
But while other communities were crippled by Sandy, a massive mobilization of volunteers in Ocean City helped residents return quickly to the island and to find food and shelter. The city, churches, businesses and everyday citizens joined together in a volunteer effort to remediate and rebuild.
OCNJ CARE, the relief group formed within days of the storm’s passing, is asking the community to celebrate that spirit today:
Mark the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy by doing something for someone else. Keep it simple. Check on a neighbor, buy someone a coffee, volunteer, clean the beach, whatever.
The character of our community glowed brightly in the wake of the storm.
To live where we live, have what we have and be who we are — we’re fortunate people.
