SATURDAY, AUGUST 23

  • Summer Book Sale in the Atrium of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. Friday, 2 p.m.-8 p.m., Sat. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • “Once on This Island”: The high school students of the Ocean City Theatre Company will present the musical “Once on This Island.” This highly original adaptation of the “Little Mermaid” won eight Tony nominations during its Broadway run.   • Character Nights (6 p.m.)  On the Ocean City Boardwalk.  Boardwalk mascots will sign autographs in front of the Music Pier. Come join the fun and meet all the Ocean City Boardwalk Merchants’ Mascots. Sponsored by Manco and Manco’s Pizza and Gillian’s Wonderland Pier.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 24

  • The Ocean City Pops presents Classical Pops: The Ocean City Pops orchestra performs 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. The full orchestra shines in Rachmaninoff’s lush and romantic second Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky favorites. The brilliant young pianist, Yang Bao, performs this crowd favorite.   • Beach Walks: Tickets may be purchased on-site, adults for $1 and children for 50 cents; South End at 9 a.m. at the 59th Street and Central Avenue entrance to Corson’s Island State Park; North End at 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean City-Longport Bridge Parking Lot (Gardens Parkway)

  • Farmers Market (8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 10) On the Ocean City Tabernacle Grounds (Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue) every Wednesday, produce vendors as well as crafters will also gather to display their goods.
  • Beach Walks: Tickets may be purchased on-site, adults for $1 and children for 50 cents; South End at 6:30 p.m. at the 59th Street and Central Avenue entrance to Corson’s Island State Park; North End at 9 a.m. at the Ocean City-Longport Bridge Parking Lot (Gardens Parkway)

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27

  • Ocean City Pops Orchestra with Diane Schuur:  The Pops presents two-time Grammy Award Winner-Pops and Jazz Singer Diane Schuur plus saxophonist, Andrew Neu, 8 p.m. at the Music Pier.   • Under the Sea Masquerade: The Betsy Young Memorial Fund presents “The Under the Sea Masquerade” from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pavilion at Boardwalk Adventures, Plymouth Place and Boardwalk. Event includes buffet dinner, dancing, live DJ, raffles, prizes and more. Tickets are $25, RSVP at (609) 233-9020 or purchase at door. Betsy Young was a popular Ocean City Intermediate School teacher who died of Cancer. Funds from event benefit the Ocean City High School Scholarship Fund. EVERY THURSDAY THROUGH THE END OF AUGUST

  • Market Days (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.): On downtown Asbury Avenue (6th to 11th streets), entertainment, face painters and balloon sculptors.
  • Family Nights (7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) On the Ocean City Boardwalk (6th to 14th streets), musical and family entertainment at different blocks on the boardwalk sponsored by: Old Salt, Playland Castaway Cove, Johnson’s Popcorn, Haunted Golf and Congo Falls
  • Inn to Inn Tours (2 p.m. to 4 p.m) Commencing at 7th Street and Central Avenue, an old-fashioned trolley winds its way through center city neighborhoods for an intimate visit to four or five bed and breakfasts. Afternoon refreshments are offered at the conclusion of the tours.
  • “Hands on History” at the Ocean City Historical Museum: Free program for children at 1 p.m. every Thursday includes hands-on activities related to various topics on Ocean City history. See more

 

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28

  • History and Restoration of the Crown Bank Building: Free lecture at the Ocean City Historical Museum starts at 7 p.m.

 

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29

  • King and Queen of Plop: Ocean City presents its unique competition, also known as the Miss Fall Gal and Mr. Fall Guy Contest. The event is held at 11 a.m. on the 9th St. Beach opposite the Music Pier. Contestants are asked to greet the fall season, always a lovely time of year, by falling dramatically (in slow motion) to the sand. Those performing the most dramatic renditions are awarded the King and Queen of Plop Trophies. Runners–up receive ribbons. Entry is free. There will be a special performance by the world’s only Wind Chimes Band. Trash Buster, the Canned Crusader and City’s environmental symbol, will demonstrate slow motion plopping techniques to contestants. He will also sing his theme song “Stand By Your Can” and recite the Contest’s Proper Plopping Poem. Santa Claus will travel from the North Pole to enjoy the warm weather and to plop. Suzanne Muldowney, aka Shelley the Mermaid, will plop by the sea. The event will be concluded with a mass plopping by all contestants. For information, call, (609) 525-9300.

  • The Ocean City Pops presents the Broadway show SWING with the Ocean City Theatre Company 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier. Tickets $30/$25, call the Box Office (609) 525-9248 or access www.ocnj.us/boxoffice. This show is repeated Sept. 2nd and 5th at the Music Pier.

 

MONDAY, SEPT. 1
