Cyclists reach the end of a long ride at Fifth Street and Boardwalk in the MS City to Shore event in Ocean City, NJ.

The first of more than 7,000 bicyclists began to roll into on Ocean City late on Saturday morning at the end of 75- or 100-mile rides.

By early afternoon a wide stream of bicycles stretched in an unending stream from the finish line at the parking lot at Fifth Street and Boardwalk back through Somers Point and Egg Harbor Township.

The two-wheeled parade was part of the annual MS City to Shore Bike Ride — a two-day ride from the Philadelphia area with an overnight stay in Ocean City.

The event was started 34 years ago by TV anchor Larry Kane, who with a few friends decided to organize a bike ride from Philadelphia to Ocean City to assist those affected by Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that took the life of his mother.

About a dozen riders participated in the first event.

Today, the event is an important part of the shoulder season for Ocean City as the cyclists seek food, shelter and entertainment of the night in Ocean City.

The end of the first day’s ride came at a staging area at the Fifth Street parking lot where food, vendors and entertainment tents were set up.
