The 22nd annual 97.3-ESPN Girls Shootout starts Saturday at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon with two defending New Jersey state champions, three South Jersey and two Central and North Jersey champions on the schedule.
The field includes five of the top 15 teams in the most recent state rankings and 10 of the top 21 teams in South Jersey.
The Saturday lineup begins with two Cape-Atlantic League teams – Atlantic Tech and St. Joseph – meeting. Then Absegami will face Springside-Chestnut Hill from Philadelphia followed by Cedar Creek against Trenton Central.
Ocean City will take on Camden Catholic at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday in a battle between two of South Jersey’s best. Following the Ocean City-Camden Catholic game Saturday night, St. John Vianney, last year’s NJSIAA Tournament of Champions winner, will face powerful Rancocas Valley.
Sunday will begin with John Leahy’s impressive Middle Township team playing Middletown South, the defending Central Jersey Group 3 champion. Sunday at 1:45, Gloucester Catholic will play last year’s North Jersey Non-Public B champion, Saddle River Day School, which features 5-7 sophomore guard Michelle Sidor, one of the state’s greatest scorer. She scored her 1,000th career point just seven games into her sophomore year.
Host Holy Spirit will play at 3:30 on Sunday against Kingsway, followed by Mainland Regional against the defending state Group 4 champion, Lenape. The final game on Sunday matches two CAL teams – Wildwood Catholic and Atlantic City.
Admission is $6 for the entire day with portions of the proceeds benefiting The Edythe Selvagn Memorial Scholarship Fund.
