One lucky surfcaster landed a 35-pound striped bass this weekend in Ocean City — in the shadow of the Ocean City Fishing Club’s 14th Street Pier.

Steve Gieseler, who lives with his wife, Nancy, in Bucks County , Pa., and owns a second home in Ocean City, caught the striper at about 7 p.m. Friday from the beach near 16th Street with clam and bunker. His good friends Mike and Cheryl Hecht, who have a home on Central Avenue, helped pull in the fish.  The fish was 44 inches long and about 35 pounds, according to Gieseler.

Photos of the 44-inch catch were submitted to our Facebook page by Maureen Murphy-Brophy, whose children were on the beach and fascinated by the prize catch.

As the Strathmere Improvement Association put it (in sharing a Facebook photo): “Whoa! Hope some swim south!”
