Jerry Regina Legacy Fund Donates $41,800 to Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation

MARGATE CITY, N.J. – Hundreds helped Surf It Forward and raise more than $34,000 for people with Cancer at the 16th annual Surf For A Cause Saturday, Sept. 10. The Jerry Regina Legacy Foundation matched their efforts with a $41,800 donation to the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation during the event after party at Ventura’s Greenhouse in Margate.

Spectators lined the sand watch more than 130 surfers compete for prizes and divisional trophies in a surfing contest on two beaches. Grom winner Tucker Collins and Gromette winner Zoe Bourgeous each took home a custom-shaped board by Brian Wynn Surfboards donated by Shore True Value Hardware.

With its mission to assist people with cancer and organizations helping those with cancer, the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation encouraged all Surf For A Cause participants to create a fundraising webpage and collect pledges. Bryce Hanin, who raised $880 and Maddie Allen, who raised $660, also each received a custom-shaped board by Brian Wynn Surfboards.

The biggest applause came for the Heart of Surfing participants with special needs who learned how to surf with the help of volunteers.

Foundation President Mark Zappone of Linwood presented a $10,000 check to Cape Regional Health System, which was accepted by Thomas Piratzky, its vice president of marketing and public relations.

“This is the single-largest donation in the history of the foundation. While we are sad to see a great foundation close shop, we are honored that the Regina Foundation chose the DRCF to receive these funds,” said Zappone.

“It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in 15 years. It’s great to see how many people we have been able to help with an idea that my brother Joe and I had sitting in an airport,” said founder Dean Randazzo.
