The Super Fresh supermarket on the 800 block of West Avenue in Ocean City will close sometime before Thanksgiving and reopen as an ACME Market.
“Typically the stores will be closed for just a few days while we convert them into an ACME,” Communications Manager Danielle D’Elia said in a written statement.
“We intend to hire/make offers to substantially all of the store-level A&P employees at the stores we are acquiring and welcome them to the ACME Markets team.”
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), the Super Fresh owner, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 19 and won approval in bankruptcy court in September to sell 95 of its stores, including the one in Ocean City.
ACME is buying 71 of them for $246 million. ACME already owns and operates a supermarket at 34th Street and Simpson Avenue in Ocean City, which will remain open as usual.
The acquisition brings ACME’s total store count to 178 in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and now New York and Connecticut.
“The company is on an aggressive timeline to convert all (71) locations to the ACME banner within the next month or so,” D’Elia said on Monday.
She said ACME will begin the conversion with stores to the north and finish in our region prior to Thanksgiving.
“As the stores transition to an ACME, our focus will be on providing our customers with fresh, full, friendly and clean stores,” D’Elia said. “We realize every neighborhood is different — that’s why we’ll be focused on providing food solutions to the neighborhoods we serve.”
Super Fresh employs about 150 people.
