PROGRESS: As of Sunday at 11 a.m., the project area is at the 59th Street jetty, which now shows only a few rocks. The rebuilt beach will stop at 59th Street and be tapered a bit to meet the beach at Corson’s Inlet State Park. The beach at 57th Street is back open, and the beach at 58th Street remains closed. Excavators are shaping the front edge of the dunes essentially to double their width in the area between 57th and 59th Streets.
Beaches between 37th Street and 57th Street are now complete. About 1.3 million cubic yards of the project of about 1.5 million cubic yards have now been placed.
WHAT’S NEXT: Work will continue in the area between 58th Street and 59th Street in the final phase of the project. Ocean City Business Administrator Jim Mallon reported to City Council on Thursday that sand-pumping operations are expected to be complete by Sept. 21. The contractor will take another five to seven days to remove pipeline and clean up. Dune crossover work is currently taking place between 55th Street and 57th Street. The planting of dune grass is scheduled for November.
