A National Weather Service Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday (June 23) for the area in red. Ocean City is on the southern edge of the watch area.

The National Weather Service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of southern New Jersey in effect until 7 p.m.

Ocean City is on the edge of the area where the storms are possible.

A “watch” indicates that conditions are ripe for development of severe weather. A “warning” would be issued when storms are present or imminent.

The forecast suggests damaging winds would be the primary threat. Hail and heavy rain also would be possible.

The NWS daily forecast says showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly 5 p.m. through midnight. The storms are on the vanguard of a cold front that could take the edge off heat that could reach 91 degrees on Tuesday with humidity making it feel hotter.

On the beach and boardwalk, steady southwest winds are keeping things cooler in Ocean City.

The sun is expected to return for Wednesday with a high temperature of 83 degrees.
