When the 24-member “Run for the Fallen” military relay team concludes the first leg of its run through Ocean City on Friday Sept. 26, American Legion Post 524 will salute their efforts with a special ceremony at its headquarters on Bay Avenue.
The three-day running event honors New Jersey soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines killed in Iraq and Afghanistan by holding small remembrances at road markers placed one-mile apart along a 182-mile pathway starting in Cape May and ending at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Holmdel.
“Post 524 is pleased to be doing its part to pay tribute to New Jersey’s brave servicemen, servicewomen and their families,” said Ocean City American Legion Commander Bob Marzulli. “This is a unique and moving event and the public is invited to join us along the route.”
The runners will enter Ocean City from the south at the Corson’s Inlet Bridge on Ocean Drive and Bay Avenue at approximately 3:05 p.m. They will then make stops at 11 additional markers before ending at Post 524 at approximately 4:35 p.m. Afterward, American Legion Post 524 will host the Gold Star Families, Blue Star Mothers and the Run Team for dinner at the Ocean City Senior Center and, along with Ocean City VFW Post 6650, will arrange for overnight accommodations for the Gold Star Families.
