A Tuesday night storm dumped heavy rain on Ocean City and delivered big surf on Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain and a near-full-moon tide combined to flood streets and cars on Tuesday night (Aug. 12).

A round of storms moved across the region as high tide hit the flood-prone bay side of Ocean City at 10:27 p.m. Tuesday. The tide was exceptionally high just two days after Sunday’s full moon, and water covered storm drain outfall pipes.

Atlantic City recorded 4.41 inches of rain, which exceeded the previous highest total for the date (Aug. 12) by more than one inch. It also was the 20th wettest single calendar day in Atlantic City history, dating back to 1874. The wettest single day there was 11.10 inches on August 20, 1997, according to the National Weather Service bureau in Mount Holly.

Millville’s 8.92 inches of rain was the second largest single day total in their history, but records there date back only to 1947.

Rainfall totals reported to the NWS in southern New Jersey showed a wide mix of precipitation:

  • Estell Manor: 6.17 inches
  • Atlantic City International Airport: 5.58 inches
  • Margate: 2.54 inches
  • Somers Point: 2.40 inches
  • Woodbine: 2.68 inches

The National Weather Service did not record or post a rainfall total for Ocean City.

With light offshore winds grooming a choppy wind swell from the storm, surfers enjoyed ideal conditions on Wednesday morning.
