“In the Manner of Henri Matisse,” a group show at the Ocean City Arts Center throughout June, has attracted a record number of local artists.

More than 35 from southern New Jersey will participate in the show. Many artists will exhibit more than one painting.

A “Meet the Artists” reception will be held 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 13. It is free and open to the public. The paintings will be for sale.

The artists, who were invited to exhibit, will show their interpretations of Matisse’s work. Henri EMile Benoit Matisse, born in France in 1869, is known for his use of color. He remains one of the best-loved modern artists and participated in several “movements” including fauvism, modernism and impressionism.

In addition, he is known for his sculpture and prints.

Participating in the exhibit are: Kathy Arleth, Lance Balderson, Meed Barnett, Marilyn Brent, Diane Brown, Kathy Ferraro, Suzanne Forrest, Heather Lynn Gibson, Alisa Harris, Shirley Hawthorne, Frances Hughes, Rae Jaffe, Joanne Killian, Wanda Kline, Mary Anne Kline, Chuck Law, Ellen LoCicero, Christina, Lowenstein, Amy Mahon, Annette Maynard, Carole McCray, Christine McPartland, Rita Michalenko, Carla Migliaccio, Marie Natale, Nancy Palermo, Phyllis Pelham, Gloria Popeck, Susan Rau, Barbara Rosin, Judith Saylor, Dino Sistilli, Thelma Snyder, Deb Spinella, Beverly Taht, Michael Waters, Carol Zerbe.

This group from Atlantic, Cape May, Camden and Gloucester Counties are the finest artists in the area.

Ocean City Arts Center Executive Director Rosalyn Lifshin said: “We hold an invitational group show each June. However, we have never gotten this large a response in the past. We are so happy to be able to feature so many great artists in one show painting in different mediums. The artists have really captured the essence of Matisse’s work and have done a great job in adding their signature styles to the art.”
