The Ocean City School District this month launched Facebook pages for its three schools, and the social media sites provide an additional tool for parents to keep up on school schedules and updates.

“Like” the following school pages to get updates in your Facebook news feed:

The pages feature information such as the “Daily Chalkboard” with calendar listings for student yearbook pictures, SAT registration deadlines, Back to School Night, Freshman Field Day, Intermediate School club sign-ups and more. They also highlight student and school achievements.

Research suggests 58 percent of the entire adult population of the U.S. uses Facebook. Among Internet users of men and women ages 18 to 50, the number of Facebook users is greater than 80 percent.

“We heard from parents that this is convenient for them,” Superintendent Kathleen Taylor said.

She said the district is working to encourage parental involvement, and the Facebook pages are one additional way to allow them to stay connected from home.

The schools also maintain websites, a “Global Connect” automated phone system for important and timely announcements, and a traditional system of sending information home with students.
