More than 7,000 bicyclists will converge on Ocean City this weekend as part of the annual MS City to Shore Bike Ride — for many a two-day ride from the Philadelphia area with an overnight stay in Ocean City.

The event was started 34 years ago by TV anchor Larry Kane, who with a few friends decided to organize a bike ride from Philadelphia to Ocean City to assist those affected by Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that took the life of his mother.

About a dozen riders participated in the first event. Thanks to the pioneering work of Kane and the Philadelphia MS Society, the event has grown into the third largest bike tour in the country. It now raises over $6 million and includes over 7,000 bikers.

The ride is an important boost to the shoulder season for Ocean City hotels, restaurants and merchants.
