PROGRESS: Pumping began today. The long-awaited beach replenishment project is officially underway. The Liberty Island, a “hopper dredge,” is shuttling back and forth between an area more than 2 miles off the coast of Strathmere (where it’s pumping sand from the ocean floor into its hold) to an area just off 42nd Street in Ocean City (where it’s pumping sand onto the beach through a feeder pipeline).
WHAT’S NEXT: State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bob Martin will join U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd), Army Corps of Engineers and City of Ocean City officials on the beach for a 10 a.m. news conference Friday (April 17). Dredging will continue with the pipeline feeding sand onto beach and heavy equipment moving it around to create a natural contour. The project will proceed northward to 36th Street.
