A weekly feature from Ocean City Beach Patrol historian Fred Miller:

Ten years ago, Ocean City Beach Patrol’s Chief Tom Mullineaux hired these men and women as rookie lifeguards after they scored high in the swimming, rowing and running tests: from left, front row, Tim Adams, Chris Whelan, Paul Boardman, Cailin Eisele, John Farnoly, Ian Carey, Casey McAllister; middle row, John Lilley, James Graham, Jim Thornton, Pat Welsh, Graham Parker, Zack Eberson, Joe Duntee; back row, Joe Carroll, Evan Eachus, Dave Teufel, Tom Newnam, Garrett Hauck, Justin Perry, Andrew Carter. Tyler Fitzick and Brad Thornton missed the picture.

The 2014 OCBP tryouts will be held Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 at 9:00 a.m., on the First Street Beach. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 10 a.m. Rookie candidates must be at least 16 years old. An application form can be picked up at City Hall or at www.ocnj.us/employment. Starting lifeguard pay is $11.28 per hour.
