The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, August 28.
Dear Friends:
We had an informative Town Hall Meeting earlier this week regarding dredging of our bayfront and lagoon areas. Those in attendance heard a presentation from ACT Engineering regarding the many issues we are facing in undertaking this significant project. I am confident that the team that ACT has assembled will assist us in undertaking both a short term and long term sustainable plan to keep our waterways clear.
Last evening City Council approved a contract to dredge Snug Harbor this fall. This material will be placed in the Route 52 site and then removed to Wildwood. The removal of material from Site 83 continues.
The beach replenishment project in the south end has reached to about 47th Street. In the next few days the contractor will shift operations to 54th Street and begin filling south to 59th Street. Work on dune crossovers and fencing continues.
I appreciate the cooperation and patience our residents and guests have shown during this project. We often are asked why such a project would be undertaken during the summer season. Lt. Colonel Michael Bliss, the District Commander for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, recently issued an informative open letter explaining the many factors that are involved in these projects, and why it is often necessary for them to take place during the season. Our summer concert series concluded with a bang as Ocean City welcomed the Beach Boys to four sold out performances earlier this week. I would like to thank our promoters and our Music Pier team for their outstanding efforts this summer.
Of course the Music Pier will continue to host outstanding entertainment featuring the Ocean City Pops Orchestra and the Ocean City Theatre Company in the coming weeks. September is a great time to attend a concert or show at the Music Pier!
