The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, Dec. 4.

Dear Friends,

I would like to share good news that we have heard preliminary results on the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (CRS) for Ocean City, and we have advanced to a class 5 rating up from a class 6 municipality last year.

CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities and promotes the awareness of flood mitigation. Pending final certification, this advancement increases property owner discounts to 25% up from 20% for policy renewals after May 1, 2016. A lot of credit for this change goes to City Council and the city administration for pursuing reasonable approaches to the recommendations in the CRS manual.

Ocean City was also recently named number five in the list of “Top Ten Christmas Towns in New Jersey” by Onlyinyourstate.com. According to the website, “This list focuses not on singular events, but specific towns with the most magnificent myriad of holiday celebrations.”

I am very proud of Ocean City’s holiday spirit and the many events that make the holidays magical. I also appreciative the support of the Chamber of Commerce, the merchant’s associations and City Council, who with the administration work hard to bring the holidays to life. But most importantly, I would like to thank our guests who make visiting Ocean City during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays a family tradition.

First Night buttons are on sale at a discounted price of $15 per person until December 15th, after which the price will be $20 per person. Buy your buttons now for $15 online at firstnightocnj.com, or call 1-800-BEACH-NJ. Buttons are also available at the Welcome Centers on the 9th Street Bridge and City Hall.
