Dear Friends,

Fourth of July Weekend is here. The ocean is warming up and the weather forecast looks pretty good. I hope you all have a great holiday with family and friends. We all count down the days until summer each year, so I will remind you to take advantage of all Ocean City has to offer and enjoy each day. I hope you have a chance to catch some of the special events planned for the week and for the holiday. And I encourage you to try a new shop or restaurant in town to support our local merchants.

With the holiday and the nice weather, we expect big crowds. I ask you all to be patient, safe and respectful of others as so many people share the roads, beach and boardwalk.

I’m happy to report that Ocean City has been named “New Jersey’s Favorite Beach” for the third year in a row. The N.J. Sea Grant Consortium announced the honor yesterday in a ceremony in front of the Music Pier. It’s just the latest of many top beach honors, and once again Ocean City was chosen by popular vote.

Out-of-town reporters sometimes ask, “Why Ocean City?”

What they don’t know is that Ocean City is more than a beach. It’s a tradition. Generations of families have made Ocean City their summer home away from home. The beach, boardwalk and bay are all an important part of so many people’s lives, and Ocean City’s unwavering commitment to being “America’s Greatest Family Resort” has served us well.

Again, I want to thank everybody who lives, works and volunteers in Ocean City for helping us achieve this honor.

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate newly elected City Council President Pete Madden, Vice President Tony Wilson and newly sworn-in council members Bob Barr, Tony Wilson, Antwan McClellan, Mike DeVlieger and Karen Bergman. I want to thank Keith Hartzell for his service as council president in the past year, and I want to thank all of the many family members and friends of the new council who came out for a heartwarming inauguration/reorganization meeting today.

I look forward to continued cooperation and mutual respect with the new council as we work to complete an aggressive capital plan while protecting the best interests of all taxpayers.

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian
