Schedule of Open Water Swimming Races in Southern NJ

BaySwim
Independence Day Bay Swim finish in 2014.

The following schedule is updated for 2015:

FRIDAY, JUNE 26

Independence Day 1 Mile Bay Swim: This calm-water bay swim moved from Kennedy Park in Somers Point  across the Great Egg Harbor Bay to Beesleys Point in 2013. Tidal currents come into play on one leg of a triangular course. Great race for first-timers, but the top of the field is always very fast. Event includes a half-mile race. Races start at 6 p.m. with race-day registration in advance.  Read more and register.

SATURDAY, JUNE 27

Bridge to Bridge Bay Swims:  The 17th annual 5K, 2K, 1.5K and 500-meter races start at 11 a.m. from the Atlantic City High School crew boathouse near the Albany Avenue Bridge in Atlantic City. Courses run in calm water between the Albany Avenue and Dorset Avenue (Ventnor) bridges or in the bay near Bader Field. Races are open to anybody but also serve as sanctioned Middle Atlantic Open Water Championship. Read more and register.

SATURDAY, JULY 11

Brigantine Beach Ocean 2K and 10K Swims: A second-year event is sponsored by the Brigantine Greenheads age-group team, the Brigantine Beach Patrol (BCBP) and the City of Brigantine Beach. It includes a Middle Atlantic sanctioned 2K open water race for registered USAS and USMS swimmers and unsanctioned 2K and 10K races (2K racers must be 11 or older and 10K racers must be 16 or older), along with a 800-meter swim for 10-and-unders. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the first race starts at 7:45 a.m. The race will be in the ocean parallel to the beach and ending at BCBP headquarters at 17th Street. Starting point will be adjusted for favorable currents. Read more and register.

SATURDAY, JULY 18

Masters 1-Mile Ocean Swim: The 36th annual Masters Swim in Ocean City goes off at 10 a.m. with registration at 34th Street. The Masters is a one of the two premier events (along with the Pageant Swim) on the local open-water calendar. It typically draws a field of several hundred. The event moved from the evening to the morning three summers ago. The swim is in the ocean parallel to the beach, and race directors pick the direction of the one-way, one-mile course on the day of the race to take advantage of favorable wind and current.  Read more and register.

SATURDAY, JULY 25

Sea Isle Beach Patrol 1 Mile Ocean Swim: This one-mile swim parallel to the beach finishes at 44th Street headquarters — with the starting point determined on the day of the race based on favorable conditions. Read more and register

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1

First Annual Wildwood Beach Patrol Pier-to-Pier Challenge:  Registration 3 to 6 pm at Wildwood Beach Patrol Headquarters at Lincoln Avenue and 6:30 pm race time. Rain Date: August 2nd at 8:30 am. Unique course takes swimmers in and out of the surf twice. The mile course will be in the form of two apex triangles, each a half mile. Swimmers will enter the water, swim out around the first apex triangle, then exit the water and proceed around a marker. Swimmers will re-enter the water to swim around the second apex triangle. Swimmers will then exit the water through a finish chute. Race Director: Bill Auty at wiljjaut@hotmail.com
