Even before a line of thunderstorms reached Ocean City early Tuesday evening, parts of the island lost electrical power.

With high humidity and temperatures topping 90 degrees, excessive demand for energy likely contributed to power outages.

Atlantic City Electric reported 5,380 homes without electricity as of 8 p.m. Tuesday. Crews were still assessing the problem, and the utility company did not yet have an estimated time for restoring service.

Before the storm arrived, power was out on the Boardwalk from Gillian’s Wonderland Pier to the Ocean City Music Pier. Across the island, the traffic lights on Bay Avenue were out between 18th Street and 34th Street. The Ocean City Community Center lost power, along with many nearby neighborhoods.

It’s not yet clear if thunderstorms contributed to further outages.

The electrical storms arrived about 7 p.m. and continued past 9 p.m. They came as a cold front moved into the region.

Wednesday is expected to be sunny with a high in the low 80s.
