Holiday celebrations will not end at midnight on New Year’s Eve in Ocean City. There are family friendly events planned throughout New Year’s Day — including a popular polar plunge known locally as the First Dip.

The annual First Plunge is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 1, 2016 at Ninth Street Beach.

The annual 5k boardwalk run will start at 1 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. This year there will be computer chip timing. Runners and walkers can register online or print a paper application. The pre-registration fee is $20. The race day fee is $30. Tee shirts will be guaranteed to pre-registered runners and will be given out while supplies last on race day.

The “First Dip in the Ocean of 2016” will take place at 2 p.m. on the beach in front of the Music Pier. Both those who jump in the ocean and those who watch are encouraged to donate to the HERO Campaign. The HERO Campaign promotes the use of designated sober drivers to prevent accidents related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

There will be a “New Year’s Day Shopping Extravaganza” in the downtown area. Local shops will be open and have sales during the day.
