Ocean City Council will vote Thursday on an ordinance that would authorize spending $1,825,000 to continue a project to replace the entire Ocean City Boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street.
The appropriation would cover a complete replacement of the substructure and decking between Sixth Street and Plaza Place (just north of Seventh Street). The first phase of the multiyear project (between Fifth and Sixth streets) was completed in April.
As with the first phase, an existing stock of southern yellow pine will be used as decking with work likely to begin in the fall. A separate resolution on Thursday’s council agenda authorizes advertising for bids from potential contractors.
The project will include reconfiguring the boardwalk ramp at Sixth Street, eliminating the north ramp and doubling the width of the south ramp to 24 feet. It also will include a redesign of the public restrooms there — with the building facing the ocean.
The appropriation is part of an ordinance that authorizes $1.9 million in spending and $1.8 million in borrowing. The appropriation also includes $80,000 for self-contained breathing apparatus for the Ocean City Fire Department.
The ordinance would require a second reading and vote from council before it could take effect.
A separate ordinance asks council to appropriate $160,000 from a capital improvement fund broken down as follows:
- $43,000 for police technology upgrades
- $43,000 for police equipment, including ATVs, weapons, bicycles and mobile computers
- $74,000 for fire department equipment including fire hose, ATVs, personal watercraft with trailer and rescue boards.
The ordinances are part of the City Council meeting, open to the public, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday (May 22) at Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall. See complete agenda.
Agenda items include advertising for bids to fix repair the historic Transportation Center at 10th Street and Haven Avenue, which was damaged by 24 inches of floodwater during Superstorm Sandy.
Council also will vote on awarding a professional services contract for a study of West Avenue traffic and bike configurations between 34th Street and North Street.
