The following are brief updates from the campaigns for the May 13 municipal election.

FIT DEBATE

Four candidates for City Council debated Monday night in an event sponsored by the Fairness in Taxes community group.

About 40 people attended the debate at the Ocean City Free Public Library.

Incumbent Councilman Mike Allegretto, Incumbent Councilman Keith Hartzell, Mike Hyson and Eric Sauder participated in a 90-minute event and fielded questions on a wide range of topics. Pete Madden, who had planned a family vacation during the school district’s Easter break before he received the invitation to the debate, was unable to attend.

Ocean City Sentinel Editor David Nahan and OCNJ Daily Editor Doug Bergen served as moderators. See remaining schedule of campaign forums and debates.

The five candidates are vying for three at-large seats on City Council.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REPORTS

Monday (April 14) was the deadline for all candidates to file their 29-day pre-election campaign finance reports with the state Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC). The mandatory reports give the public a look at campaign finances and campaign contributors. The reports will not be released to the public until 10 a.m. Monday, April 21, when they will be posted to the NJ ELEC site.

BALLOT POSITIONS

With a random drawing of names last month, ballot positions were determined for the May 13 election. For the council race, voters will see, in order: Keith Hartzell, Michael Allegretto, Michael Hyson, Eric Sauder and Pete Madden. For the mayor’s race, voters will see: Jay Gillian and Ed Price.

Madden also drew the bottom ballot position for an (unsuccessful) Board of  Education election in 2012, though he returned to the board in the 2013 election.
