A pipeline that comes ashore just south of 42nd Street now stretches for nearly a half-mile to past 38th Street as part of the Ocean City NJ beach replenishment project.

PROGRESS: The project has reached 38th Street. Work on this first phase started at 42nd Street, and beaches at 40th, 41st and 42nd streets are now reopened. The sand in the completed area appears to be a little coarser than the native sand at the top of the beach, and it contains some small pebbles and shells. The hopper dredge reportedly is now gathering finer sand from a different part of the offshore borrow area. That helps them work more quickly and leaves behind a nicer beach. The completed beaches are wide and elevated, and sand ramps allow beachgoers to cross over a pipeline that now stretches down the beach to the work area. Beaches at 38th and 39th streets are closedas of Sunday afternoon. Work can be viewed from the top of the beach at all blocks.

WHAT’S NEXT: The project will proceed northward to 36th Street. It appears as if two blocks of beach will be closed at any time as work migrates north. After work is complete to 36th Street, the next phase of the project will be from 42nd Street south to 49th Street.
